A Christmas Poem

Over the past year, I've begun to appreciate poetry and have attempted five poems to date. In fact, I recently bought a sweatshirt that reads, "I'm a poet and I just know I am." That about says it all when it comes to poetry and me...hey, I'm still learning. Below is my first attempt at a Christmas poem. We printed my poem in last year's Christmas cards alongside a photo of the beautiful angel my mother crocheted nearly three decades ago. Christmas Tree Angel By Beth Carter Bejeweled with strands of pearls Feathered birds and twinkling lights; Glittering ornaments and velvet bows Encircled our tree with delight. Plump snowmen and toy soldiers Carefully placed just right; Shiny Red and Green Packages Completed the joyful sight. The most special gift of all Topped our majestic tree; A frayed, embroidered angel Handmade by Mommy and me. Do you enjoy poetry? Have you written any poems? If so, please submit them.

  1. Here is a poem I wrote back in 1995 or 1996. Of course, I no longer feel the same way.

    Workaholic!

A thought comes to the forefront of my mind
As I sit here in my recliner chair.
I reflect on my marriage to Justin
And realize the quality I once loved
Has become the quality I despise.
He is a great man but he is seldom home.
The man I married is always working.
    He is a compulsive workaholic
And now I'm feeling a bit resentful
Because I'm not his top priority.
Am I too selfish and too demanding
For want of my husband's full of attention?

  2. I loved that poem, Beth. I remember that Christmas card from last year. What a great tradition.

The only poem I ever wrote was to my dad after he died. My mom framed it. Too long to share here, though. Started out, "Are you fishing with Angels, Daddy?"

It was good (I thought), but I'll stick to fiction.

  3. JarieLyn, that's a great poem. Sad situation but a really good one. Glad you no longer feel the same way. Are you still married to Justin?

Shirley, thanks. Your poem to your dad sounds wonderful. I love the beginning. How sweet and very special.

  4. Beth, Yes I am still married to Justin. We just had our 15th wedding anniversary last month and we've been together for 18 1/2 years. Life is good.

Oh, I forgot to say that I like your Christmas poem. It's really good.

  5. Glad to hear it! Sounds like you have a very strong marriage. (And it took you a long time to get married--same here).

Thanks for your nice comments about my poem. They're fun to write. :)
