Incomplete Sentences

Is it just me or is everyone using incomplete sentences these days? Here's an example of one I hear a lot lately: Do you want to go with? This seems to be a trendy thing to say but it really bugs me. Is it really too much to ask to just finish the darn sentence by adding one little word? For example, "Do you want to go with me?" or "...with us?" You know. The way we used to talk in the good old days. By bringing this up, I know I risk sounding like my high school English teacher. I'm just curious, though. Do these incomplete sentences bug any of you writers? Labels: English draft 12:21

  1. Unfortunately, we're probably gonna see more of that. In texting, which I don't do, there's apparently a whole new world of English being taught. I even bought a poster at Walmart that shows the text spelling for words.

And, then there's twitter, where you can only use 140 characters to say what you want. Everything is abbreviated these days. I think we're just gonna have to evolve with the "in" crowd.

  2. I'm becoming an old fuddy duddy, I guess.

I think it's fine for texting but I hate to see and hear people say things like I posted.

I'm fearful the next generation won't be able to spell with all the abbreviations--just like this generation can't count back change. It's sad. I know I'm generalizing but have encountered quite a bit of this type of thing. I'm met with a deer-in-headlights look if I give kids too much money plus a penny to avoid getting pennies back. Have you encountered that? Sigh.

  3. If you want frustration with the abbreviated forms of EVERYTHING, you should be my generation. We were upbraided for that kind of laziness when I was in school. Most of us have our own habits and idiosynchrisies (sp?)that are hard for us to get past--I HATE this new method of communicating. BTW and OMG are the only two that I know by heart--lost when the rest of the alphabet gets strung together in gibberish form. LOL

  4. Funny and sad what you said about counting back change. I went to Taco Bell awhile back, and the kid there didn't have a clue how much change to give me back. At one point, she actually went to get her cell phone (cause it had a calculator on it) and tried to do it that way. I can't remember why the register didn't do that anyway. I think she typed in the amount wrong, which screwed up everything. REALLY sad thing is that she was so flustered, she couldn't figure it out with her cell phone either. I finally TOLD her how much to give me back.

    Now that's scary!!!
