Writing Children's Picture Books

Some of you may not be aware that I also write children's picture books. I absolutely ADORE writing them. They make me laugh, giggle, and just feel warm and fuzzy inside--something I hope to bring to my readers.

Now that JANO is over, I'm going to let my novel rest for a month and focus on writing more picture books. If you have any funny children's stories, traditions, or anecdotes you'd like to share (and let me possibly incorporate), please let me know. I'll mention you in the acknowledgement section if I use your information.

Children's literature is so important. Let's instill the love of reading at an early age.

  1. Good for you, Beth. I can't wait to read one of your children's books. How many are you working on?

  2. Thanks, Shirley. I think you've read my two completed manuscripts. I cannot wait to see the illustrations. Those really make the books come alive.

I've drafted two other picture book manuscripts and also drafted a series idea for picture books. I constantly get ideas for them and drop them into a file folder.

I'm just wondering if I should use a different pen name for picture books vs. romantic suspense or women's fiction? I'd prefer not to and would be interested in everyone's opinion.

Of course, I have the cart before the publishing contract!

  3. I would call your cart-before-the-contract a confident goal with realistic expectations! Like Shirley, I can't wait to see one in print.

Amanda Barke has a darling new book out called the "Sleepy Sun"--you're probably aware of that. Did you know that Reta Allan did the illustrations? We have soooooo many talented people in our local writers groups.

Good luck with your endeavors. Hope 2011 brings all my dear writer friends a plethora of publications.

  4. Thanks, Ginny. I can't wait to show you one in print!

I ordered Mandy's new picture book yesterday and sent her a message asking about her illustrator. Reta Allen did a great job on the cover. I'll have to contact her, too.

Good luck to you as well. I hope we all land contracts in 2011.
