Friday Fictioneers

It's Friday Fictioneer time. Every Friday Madison Woods at www.madisonwoods.wordpress.com provides a photo prompt. Writers are encouraged to write a very short story (100 words). Here's mine. Give it a try. It's fun.

MEMORIES
By Beth Carter

Brad stared horrified at their home ablaze. Meanwhile, Erica honked the horn.

“Come on. Hurry!”

Brad noticed Erica’s set jaw and steely eyes. “Where are we going?”

“You’ll see.” Erica soon passed every car on the only clear road out of the inferno.

When she reached the canyon, Erica popped the trunk, pulling out hiking boots and an ax.

“What the hell are you going to do with that?”

Erika positioned a bandana over her mouth and motioned for Brad to follow her.
“We’re going to cut that tree down. When we started dating, you etched our initials in it, remember? That fire isn’t going to get everything.”

    1. Yes, it's such fun and I've been able to incorporate several into novels. Love the anticipation of the prompt each Friday. I'll read yours as soon as I can. Getting JANO stuff together and must shower and head to ORA so it'll probably be tomorrow. Thanks for commenting!

  2. That's a clever twist. My husband wrote my name next to his on a tree near his childhood home. Years later we added our first daughter's name. Sadly, it rotted before we could add our youngest's name...still, the memory survives.

  3. I really like that, Beth. I wonder how many couple carve their initials in trees these days. Those who do, never forget it.

  4. Ha! I liked the point of your story :) My future SIL carved his and my daughter's initials in a tree while he was on an elk hunt this past fall.

  5. Thanks for commenting, everyone. I love how this sparked memories of initials etched in trees! My husband got me the coolest necklace for Christmas that looks like tree bark (in silver!) with our initials on it. It's one of my all-time favorite gifts. Maybe that was in my self-conscious when I wrote this! These prompts are such fun. I really look forward to them.

BTW, we took a unique, fun pic while in KC last weekend. I'll post it on my blog in a couple of weeks (have plans for something else before that). It'll be a great prompt. But I don't plan to do that often. That's Madison's thing and Jan's.

  6. Hurray! Just this morning I also wrote about initials in trees. Mine didn't make it. I'm loving that yours did, Robin

  7. An interesting take on the question, "If your house caught on fire and you had to get out, what would be the one thing you would grab to take with you?"

    Here's my story: http://wp.me/p24aJS-2l

    1. That would be an interesting prompt/question, LupusAnthropos. In this case, I envisioned their home totally destroyed by the fire. That's why Erica was bound and determined to cut those initials off of the tree.

  8. Oh, my! How ironic! As far as I know, the words/letters that come up to validate posting a message are random.

Well, when I just posted my response to this story about the fire, the word it asked me to type was "singe." ROTFL!

  9. Hi Beth, sorry to be so slow getting to this. Your comment was posted in my spam file and I didn't find it right away. Your story was engaging and, as I see it, three pronged, a strong, self-reliant woman, a raging forest fire, and a romantic touch at the end. Great storytelling!

    1. Aw, thanks. I'm a hopeless romantic and an independent woman! Glad you enjoyed my storytelling. I'll read yours again.

  10. Great story Beth.
    Some things are worth saving.
I can still remember the tree I first etched my initials in over 45 years ago.

    1. Thanks, Mike. I'll have to pop over and read yours after the Super Bowl. Guests are coming and I'm not ready. Cool that you etched initials in a tree! Love it.

    1. Thanks, Doug! Yes, she does! I'm glad you tracked me down, too.

I have had trouble posting comments to several blogs and I believe yours was one of them. I'll keep trying.
