FRIDAY FICTIONEERS - Hannah's Punishment

It's time for my favorite weekly writing challenge--the Friday Fictioneers! Writers from around the world write these wee tales based on the same photo prompt. Here is this week's photo compliments of our Hawaiian friend, Doug Macilroy.

HANNAH’S PUNISHMENT
By Beth Carter

Hannah swatted a fly with her tail, her sneer undetectable due to the hose in her mouth. What? The cows are too good for this?

Her neck ached. Why doesn’t Farmer Fred put in an irrigation system? Hannah glared as Fred drove his new John Deere. She grimaced when she saw his fancy Range Rover. She suspected he had received a big lottery payout.

She knew she was being punished for placing fourth during the team roping event. Sure, my talking brother, Mr. Ed, got a TV show. Meanwhile, I get to hold this stupid hose and get trench hoof.

  1. Good approach. Too bad he could spray the farmer.

  2. Beth, this is Russell using Connie's log in.

I wondered when someone was going to sneak Mr. Ed into one of these stories. Looking back, I wish I'd written one about Mr. Ed's smarter brother - HA!

Sounds like this poor horse got the short end of the stick.

  3. I wondered who you were!

Yes, we can't all be winners every time. Poor Hannah did get the short, soggy end. But knowing women, she'll get revenge.

  6. Thanks for including team roping. Was she part of the header or heeler team? And I love the trench hoof (which wouldn't really be funny if it happened.)

    Happy weekend,

    1. You are way ahead of me with that question, Janet. I only know a few of the rodeo stunts but not in great detail.

All I could think about was how WET her hoof was getting so I had to include something about that. Thank you.

    1. Silver Flash the Stud would, indeed, cheer Hannah up. I bet she'd drop that hose in a hurry. Thanks, Perry.

  10. Willllllllburrrrrrr...this has been the week of homage to Mr. Ed. I enjoyed that show.
Cute story, Beth. Hope Hannah can rise above being a farmer's nag.

    1. Oh, she's not nagging. She senses Unfair treatment on the farm and is a bit snarky about that.

  11. I like the horse's voice in the story, with the bitterness toward others on the farm. Nice addition with the farmer having a new tractor and Range Rover!

  12. We didn't get Mr Ed over here in the UK, but it seems to be cropping up in lots of the stories this week. This is really funny, I like her voice, and her snarky little comments about the farmer. :)

    1. Oh, too bad you didn't get to see Mr. Ed. It was a cute show when I was a kid. Maybe you can see it online.

I'm glad you liked my story. Thanks!

  13. Hannah has such a great voice. Maybe she can point that hose in the direction of Fred's John Deere.

  15. Hi Beth,
Always enjoy your stories and this one is no exception. Wanted to ask you something. I have an 8-month-old grandson and I wanted to get some of your books to read to him. Where could I get them? Thanks. Ron

    1. Hi Ron.

That's so nice of you to think of my books! Both picture books are available on Amazon and BN.com. I also have a supply. If you want me to personalize them with your grandson's name, let me know and thank you!

  17. Dear Beth,

You have a whimsical take on the prompt and it left me chuckling. Good job.

If I have to do the Captcha thing I'm going to be thinking like that horse. Here goes....

    Aloha,

    1. I know. So many takes from the same prompt always amazes me. All I could think about was how wet that hoof was getting and how his neck must ache. Thanks!

  21. Fourth place at his farm means manual labor for the horse. The farmer is unafraid to spend money on himself. Poor horse may have to talk to Ed's agent.

    1. Exactly. Mr. Ed had a much better agent. Thanks for stopping by.
